Zero Motorcycles SR/S: the first electric sport-touring

As I ventured exactly one year ago, when Zero Motorcycles He presented the naked SR/F (read my words), The new platform developments based on ZF engine 75-10 and the trellis frame have not been slow to generate the first “derived”, si fa per dire. It's called SR / S and is the first electric sport-touring – in the tight sense of the definition – the Californian brand that now has a range on three different platforms.

Today we were able to finally take comfort in looking at pictures and official data that describe us – but you already suspected – a product increasingly mature.

Captain aerodynamic

If there were no substantial changes in the SR platform introduced exactly a year ago, The first significant change concerns the aesthetics. The SR / S is widely careened. This is the first time for the American brand, and it is, di fatto, the only electric sports touring on the market.

Yes, because there are other electrical fairing but more sportiness, or the Energetic Ego and Lightning Strike ed LS-218, but still no one had dared the paper of the tourist bubble and Zero has in fact all it takes to do so.

The SR / S fits perfectly in the American range which now has in practice 3 families (although with little imagination as to names) for different power unit and chassis: SR/F ed SR/S, SR, DS e DSR e infine FX ed FXS.

Much of the work on the SR / S, therefore, It concerned the fairing design in order to give it its own style, certo, but especially effective in terms of comfort and aerodynamics.

On an electric bike more than ever, good aerodynamics can make the difference in terms of consumption and therefore of the distance traveled.

Even the rear subframe is different than the SR / F and is more elongated to provide a more comfortable sitting also to the passenger. The platforms have been repositioned as the handlebar is higher for a more comfortable position.

Overall I must say that the result is very pleasing and original especially for this lighthouse so wide but very vaguely resembles another American motorcycle: Buell 1125. Not exactly an encouraging comparison, I have to say, given the results that brought that project…

From the side view, instead, with surfaces so taut and solid, the SR / S appears closer to a BMW K series. That is a way to attract the public European-mittle historically more inclined to sport touring?

But how sti mirrors carry them?

Particularly curious is the positioning of the mirrors, this also to improve the aerodynamics zic. I cherish the doubt that they can offer an optimal view, but I also hope to refute this little suspicion as soon as possible with a live meeting.

Word to the numbers

190 Nm always available; 200 km/h and up to 323 km range (with optional Power Tank). The battery is always to be 14.4 kWh of SR / F and is at the moment the best compromise between weight and autonomy and, likely, with a cheerful and careless driving in extra urban totals € 200 km.

The charging takes place with Attack Type 2 (the format is emerging as the most common and that you find on most of the columns) and it is interesting to note that on the SR / S can be connect with up to 3 moduli for rapid charging (although in that way and than is proper is not specified). What does it mean? It means that with this setup the bike would charge almost all in just one hour! Of course as long as you bring along all three modules… What that might ultimately has no real being achieved.

Controlled and connected

La SR/S – as the sister SR / F – is equipped with the operating system that Cypher III, in practice, It manages all the electronic systems of the motion from the stability control (MSC at Bosch), ABS cornering, traction control and drag torque, al dashboard (what once was known as the dashboard or instrument) until this app on your mobile.

This is not just a way to control the parameters of the bike, charging status or communicate directly with the operating center. From here it intervenes by changing the character of the bike. There are four modes of preset guide (Rain, Eco, Sport e Street) and even 10 those ones customized and programmed very quickly and intuitively right from the app. But that's not all, and there are many other features to entertain the most perverse of electronic engineers.

Editions and Pricing

The Zero Motorcycles SR / S is available in two colors, skyline silver e cerulean blue, both Premium and Standard versions both available from March 2020.

The premium we find charger 6 kW (3 kW on Standard) and heated handgrips. Prices are for 24.340 euro e 22.080 Euro.
