12 months and 7000 km with electric motorcycle

This concludes my long test with the Zero Motorcycles DSR: it is time to take stock of these 12 months and 7000 km along the electric motorcycle. And to sell it!

A year has flown by very quickly. 12 months together with an electric motorcycle: I was excited and a little’ worried because I knew I would have consequences and I am not referring only to a few “of follow-”. Certo, just take a look here to understand that things have happened and this Zero Motorcycles DSR 14.4 It was for me a real flying laboratory, where I learned a lot.

Many things have changed and in fact my own approach to the bike and his status is different. But we're not here for me and my existential psychodrama, how to take stock of how to use an electric bike for four seasons: It is ready to replace our desires in a traditional motorcycle? We are ready to deal with sockets, small columns, charging times and range anxiety? And at the end, the game is worth the candle?

I will not elaborate on many aspects concerning electric bikes in general. Certainly there is still a lot of culture to be developed on the subject because we are not used to use them and if you need quick smattering to answer most of your questions, laws i 10 Myths on the electric motorcycle.

I want to focus instead on some information about this test.

An electric motorcycle for traveling?

The present electric motorcycle is a “dual sport” although to be honest a lot more street and town than we would like it. All in all, however,, I chose it because in my opinion the most complete and versatile electric motorcycle on the market today.

With my KTM on the bench

Another consideration is the test mode. Simply, as I always do when I get the chance to try a bike for a while’ time, I used the electric motorcycle in many different ways as possible.

One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the electric bike is so much easier and practice on I have not used it for a year my KTM 990 Adventure. And when I felt like I was saying I use it “Not! You have to take a test!”. Of course I also used other bikes in this time frame, but Zero was my main means.

How much it cost this test?

We arrive at an interesting point. Generally do a bike test involves for myself spending. As minimum it, withdraw, deliver and use a motorcycle test will cost exactly as it has for any motorcyclist who moves with their bikes. If I had used for these 7000 km my 990 instead of the electric motorcycle, with the average petrol 1,50 Euro, I would have spent approximately 700 Euro. Not to mention the 80 euro stamp duty and the cost of a ticket and a possible reduction of insurance premium. Let's say that, and span, the electric motorcycle has saved me more than 1.000 Euro. And if I had made more progress… the savings would have been greater!

That's why I feel I can say without fear of contradiction that from a utilitarian point of view use the two-wheeled vehicle already today there is no match and the electrical proves convenient in the long run. One of his more widespread (especially thanks to the four wheels market) will bring – si spera – at lower purchase costs in a short time.

  1. Ciao Nicola,
    most beautiful video. Congratulations.
I commented on Youtube, but I write here to ask you something that I've seen and I would like to have from you a tip for buying.
I refer to the camera that you had on the chest. Because I'd like to film some trip and since I hate the unicorn with cameras on the helmet, I ask that you used, how accessory to attach to your chest and maybe if there is a solution with best quality / price (I would not svenarmi, for instance).

Thanks again and expect new videos.

    1. Hello Giulio, thanks to you. The camera you see is a GoPro Hero 5 Black, a model a few years ago but still valuable (now they are 7) to which I put a metal cage to shocks and to attack any directional microphones and a bib which is called “chesty” and find both GoPro is produced in China unmarked. I recommend using your own body as a shock absorber, filming is much more stable when mounted on the chest or helmet (I mount to the side, never over). Do not take cameras 40 Euro… are money down the drain. I recommend GoPro for various reasons that now becomes long detailing. You can buy a Hero 7 Silver https://amzn.to/2Mb27Rt that has all the functions but Black is already a very good action cam or look for if there is still some 5: https://amzn.to/2M8Kx0b
Then there are Chinese products that are not bad and they cost less or is there something Nilox. Finally Sony is an excellent action cam (gopro prices) and recently it came out to DJI but even here it is not costing you a lot less, then evaluates the features that interest you the most.
Here's a video of some’ four years ago that maybe it will come in handy: http://www.motoreetto.it/come-fare-un-buon-video-del-tuo-viaggio-in-moto-la-guida-definitiva/

      1. Grazie Nicola, I saw your video (and reposted). It was really useful. You've also caught: guardavo le telecamere che mi hai cantato 😀
Thank you so much for your advice definitely indispensable for me, but I think many like me.
        Best wishes and good road.
        Giulio
