FX: my proof of the enduro of Zero Motorcycles

FX is enduro 100% electric motorcycles. I spent a few weeks with her and in this video I explain everything I have learned.

I've been around this for a couple of weeks Zero Motorcycles FX model year 2017, an all black endurine and 100% electric designed more for everyday use than for mule tracks. Today I'm talking about her, so if for any reason you hate the electric skip ahead. But if you are curious to understand more ... well this article is for you.

If you have more doubts about the electric than reliable information, However, I recommend that you start by reading my article on 10 myths to dispel about the electric motorcycle.

First question: what a Zero FX does with a full tank?

Going around with an electric motorcycle today means answering an interrogation at each stop. Compared to mine first tests a couple of years ago when people looked at me strangely, today they are all more curious. So I'll start by answering the first one that everyone does.

The average autonomy is of 80 real km and to recharge it with a normal socket 220 from 0% it takes 4 hours.

The internal charger is from 650 Watt and if you have a quick charger, the times can greatly reduce up to 1 hour and a half. The autonomy instead depends on how you ride the bike. You will find that an urban guide, made of stops and accelerations it is much more profitable than driving at constant speed. So in the city they can be easily surpassed i 100 km. While on the ring road you go down to 70. But a lot depends on how much you keep open and how much you take advantage of the release scroll. Ah, uphill it consumes but downhill it recharges because it has a system of regenerative deceleration.

The battery of the FX is from 6.5 kWh. The DS and DSR that I used in Milan travel – Misano or during ECO-Dolomites they had one from 13 kWh. That's why autonomy was double. The Zero range is in fact based on two battery modules from 6,5 (that in 2018 however, they pass to 7,2) and the FX is the smallest and lightest bike in the range. is also available in motard version, it's called FXs.

Second question: what size is the Zero FX?

The displacement, since there are no cylinders, it is a parameter that makes no sense. The engine is a air-cooled brushless with internal magnet that delivers 106 Nm di coppia e 44 CV di potenza, more than enough to push in an exuberant and fun way i 130 kg of the Zero FX. I would say it is comparable to a mono 350 which however has the pair of a twin cylinder 900. The most galvanizing part, as always on the electric, is acceleration and the total absence of transients. In practice, every time you take the throttle it is as if you have already climbed all the gears.

Sorry, you said funny? Let's not joke…

Yup, I said funny. This endurine is a real fun and I found it an authentic anti-stress especially in city traffic, where you can easily dribble any situation. In my opinion, there is nothing better in the city: you are quick, silent, you can get on and off anywhere and you don't smoke.
Dal punto di vista dinamico the weights are well distributed and also compared to the Zero S sisters, DS and DSR are perceived less the load on the front when entering the curve. One feels that it is lighter and taller. It drives very well, and on the road he behaves quickly and safely. In short, I am very kind.

Yes, but how the chassis of this Zero FX is?

If the engine wins immediately and the rapidity in the changes of direction enhances, it's also true that the cycling sector is the one that would deserve more attention in the future. You can still improve a little bit while braking (good, with disengageable ABS, but not exceptional) and in Showa suspensions that demonstrate a more road calibration and are a little too dry in the responses.

Is this FX wheeled true 21 and 18 it can go anywhere, but cyclist is not comparable to a specialist enduro. It's more an enduro every day. In daily use it gives the best. The driving position is much more comfortable than many enduro and mountaineering bikes. In Zero they decided to make a slightly dug saddle and it is a good choice when using the bike for commuting. The most specialized enduro bikes have a straight and hard saddle, which is good for off-roading, but it makes them less pleasant to use for going to work. This FX, on the other hand, is more designed for going to work, maybe skipping a few sidewalks or flower beds ... more comfortably.

I really used the Zero FX instead of my bike?

In these two weeks I have used it instead of my Adventure. It is clear that they are two completely different motorcycles and we are not talking about an enduro suitable for travel ... but in everyday use I definitely preferred it. In traffic my bike suffers, warms up, she gets stuck because she's big and heavy. With the FX I found a light vehicle (half weighs and clutters), agile who has no clutch and gearbox and therefore with all due respect to the most conservative it is undeniable that you get tired much less. And with the type of delivery of these engines you don't feel the need.
It has no load capacity, it has no spaces, it is essential and considering that for better or for worse you must always carry the power cable with you this is a bit of a shame. A case on the rear fender would be enough as those used on the mono of the eighties. After all, even then it was necessary to take the tools with you…

Why on earth would you want a Zero FX?

Perché è una figata, really. But the fundamental limitations of this FX are two.

  1. The first is certainly that difficult relationship between autonomy and charging times. Wait four hours each 80 km sounds like something unbearable and heck it is. By calibrating the movements well and experiencing, you never get so much time off. For example the other day I did 55 km to go on a date. By doing all the ring road I consumed more than expected and I arrived with the 30% residue. I put it in charge as if it were a cell phone, but the meeting was short and the charge had just passed the 40%. In fear of not being able to return, I therefore asked to be able to stop a little longer. Unplugged at 50% I changed my way and I made the city, discovering not only that the distance was considerably less – a little more than 30 km – and that I could easily do it with the 40%, but that if I had chosen this itinerary even on the outward journey, I would not have needed to recharge. I would have gone and come back. What I mean to say is that the approach completely changes. He pays more attention to detail, to the road to take. Time and kilometers take on another value.
  2. The second limit is still the price of a new and not widespread technology. Zero FX is the cheapest in the family and costs 12.500 Euro. A beautiful figure, not exaggerated but frightening. Beyond considerations on the environmental impact, however, some aspects must be considered. The first is the almost total absence of maintenance costs. Gomme, tablets, belt and any brake and fork fluids are the only interventions required. The second is the stamp duty and insurance. The third is the cost of a full, which is less than 2 Euro. The fourth is that the battery, for whose deterioration we are most concerned, è guaranteed for 5 years unlimited mileage. No traditional bike offers anything like this. Finally I add a consideration on the used: at the moment there is no second-hand market for these bikes which seems bad and instead for you who want to sell after two years it is good because you can offer a product that is still rare and still covered by a warranty for others 3 years. And there will certainly be someone who would gladly switch to electricity if he could save something on the purchase. Then the keeping of the value in my opinion will be good.

Hope you enjoyed this test. If so, share it on social media. See you next time and I recommend ... Give gas but responsibly!
