Because the Dunlop Mutant will like it (quasi) everyone?

After the Meridian, Dunlop has presented a new tire that I find interesting and innovative: his name is Mutant and he agrees to scramblers, the adventure by the crossover. Let's see how it's done.

As promised in the previous video dedicated to Dunlop Trailmax Meridian here I am again to talk about another Dunlop novelty: the Mutant.

I state that it seemed immediately interesting to me and I'm going to explain to you why you might like it regardless of the bike you are riding.

Therefore, in Dunlop claim both one crossover tire, term that lately is quite fashionable both among cars and between motorcycles. And indeed the crossover are, together with the adventure, among the most popular on the market.

They somehow replaced the sports tourer which in fact have almost disappeared from the radar.

But this Mutant is not addressed only to them and in honor of the very definition of crossover is a cross product which can appeal to those who drive a scrambler as well as a large motard, from those who have a roadster to those who have a maxi adventure.

We are therefore talking about the total tire?

Let's not exaggerate. It is as much as a crossover can be considered a total bike. Let's say it comes close to us.

We are talking about a truly remarkable versatility of use (at least on paper because unfortunately, as is clear, I have not yet had the opportunity to try it).

The intuition of Dunlop men is not new: in 2006 introdussero what Sportmax Mutant designed for single-cylinder supermotards. Meanwhile, come detto, the market has evolved and today's crossovers like the Yamaha Tracers, the Ducati Multistrada, BMW XRs inherited genes from the motard world. But they are also bigger, heavy, with richer torque engines, they have to make important mileage… Here after three and a half years of development, the new Mutant arrives to fill these requests.

So it's a tire that wants to combine the needs of sportiness with the supermotard with those of an adventure trip. Quali sono?

Stability: for travel with heavy motorbikes.

Wet grip to be an all season therefore also suitable for commuting.

Fun on asphalt and good behavior on dirt roads.

It's a good durability always for tourism purposes.

The result is a very sculpted tread, with a clearly recognizable design that also has a pleasant aesthetic in my opinion.

Under the skin we find a structure similar to that seen for Meridian in the previous video. So double canvas in Rayon, insulating layer and coating in steel rope. The carcass has different tension zones to improve the footprint on the ground and the compound is high in silica for better grip at low temperatures.

Rubber is always like the Meridian front is single-compound while the rear is softer on the shoulders and stiffer in the center, with the central compound that slides under the heel for greater rigidity and more homogeneous consumption.

It is therefore natural to think that between Meridian and Mutant there is only a superficial difference, but Dunlop replies that this is not the case and shows us how the profiles are also different.

It is noted that that of the Mutant is more sporty. Consequently, with the same motion, according to the manufacturer, the Mutant offers a more performing behavior especially if we put the wheels on the dirt: greater grip, progressiveness and easy handling.

But I haven't said a few things about this Mutant yet.

The first is the M + S marking. This does not mean that it is a winter tire as we mean cars, but first of all it indicates that it is very sculpted and that we can expect good behavior on cold surfaces, dirty and slippery.

The second is that thanks to the measures it can be fine per circa 300 models di moto, also quite different from each other. Looking at the sales rankings, can be shod by 12 of the first 20 moto.

Where is the Mutant therefore loses the confrontation at home with the Meridian?

On the price, placing a step higher – net of any offers it is clear – and on the journey because it is softer. However, he wins over versatility which is his real strength.

For this reason, the articles and videos that I publish on Motoreetto.it are accessible to everyone and without advertising banners because the information must be open and shared.
I am doing it independently and it is allowed by the people who have decided to join my CLAN.
It would be fantastic if you also considered being part of it.
